Created in 2011, Éditions du sous-sol defend a singular literature on the verge between essay and fiction called "narrative nonfiction" or "creative nonfiction", translated as "journalisme narratif" [narrative journalism] and that we like to call Littérature du Réel [literature of the real].
Documentaries by the great Gay Talese, Ted Conover’s immersive investigations, Maggie Nelson’s intimate and poetic tales, Pulitzer-prize-winning memoires by the surfer/war correspondent William Finnegan… All these works show literary merit through their use of language, narrative codes and their capacity to say and read the world.
